Should you let your aging parent eat what they want?
For years I tried to get my mother in law to eat healthy to no avail. She would pretend to be listening and agree and then say but I don't like carrots (or whatever it was I was trying to get her to eat.) I would be so frustrated.
( I tend to be a bit of a health nut :-)
At one point, when she was younger I even told her I would not take care of her if she didn't eat right and take care of herself. I felt bad after but she caught my bluff. It didn't phase her in the least. She knew that I would always look after her. We have that kind of relationship.
She is 86 years old now and eats mostly candy, cake, sweet rolls....pretty much anything sweet. She lives in an Independent Living Community with 3 squares a day and the food is pretty good but the other residents tell me she just pushes the food around on her plate until the dessert comes. She wolfs that down! They all tell me this because they want me to do something. Well I am done with trying every tactic I can think of to get her to eat right. I know there is always good healthy food available if she wants it and she doesn't even have to cook it! So I have decided that at this point in her life I will just love her and her sweet tooth!
