Two years ago we moved my mother in law from the home she had lived in for almost 60 years 250 miles away to an Independent Living community close to my husband and I. It was, hands down, the best decision we have made. Was it easy? Heck no!! But I would do it again in a heartbeat. My only wish is that we didn't wait until there was a crisis.
We had tried for years to get Pat to move since she had no family living close by but like many of her generation she dug her heels in proclaiming that she wanted to stay in her own home. The last year Pat was in that home there were four falls resulting in a split head requiring stitches, broken ribs, black eye and the grand finale a broken pelvic bone. During that year Pat also had a small stroke probably because she was mixing up her medication schedule.
She didn't want to move but after the last fall she no longer had a choice. We packed her up and moved her. At first she was angry and didn't want to be in her new apartment but she soon began to adjust and make some new friends. She now joins the Red Hat ladies every month for a luncheon.
My husband and I have peace of mind now. we know that she has 3 meals a day and friends to eat with, there is transportation if she needs and we are close by to visit and help if the need arrises. We also hire the onsite service to check twice a day to make sure she takes her medication correctly.
In two years Pat has not had one trip to the emergency room or spent one night in the hospital! Woo Hoo! Don't wait until it's too late. Make the move, you will be glad you did.
