You Think It Won't Happen To Your Family
Until it does!
After strong recommendation from me that it was time to place mom in a secured environment the family choose to move her into a 55+ community. I wanted to cry! I pleaded with them to at least have a home care service watch her close while she oriented to her new surroundings.
Any change is stressful for a patient with any type of dementia including Alzheimer's. A move is especially stressful. Even if they have never wandered before they may take off now. A 55+ community has no system in place to help someone in this situation. The staff is not trained to be able to help. Read my book for more information on these options.
The very first weekend there she wandered off in an unfamiliar area and was eventually picked up by the police for her own safety.
This can and does happen! Luckily it was the police who found her and were able to call the family since she did have an ID bracelet. I know that moving a parent is stressful and scary. I get it. But please recognize that there is a problem and address it. Don't bury your head in the sand and pretend it cannot happen to your family.
