The Perfect Home For A Couple!

Caring for both mom and dad can be a real challenge! It can be really expensive also. You want to keep your parents together but when one or both of them need 24/7 care where do you go?

I found this gem in Katy, Texas. This small residential care home has around the clock care for only 3 people. They have a room available that is perfect for a couple. The master bedroom with a private bath will make your parents feel right at home.

The owner has a real heart for this business. You see, this was Mark's mother's home. And the caregivers who work here... well they cared for Mark's mom for over 5 years. :-)

A couple can have this room and all the loving care that goes with it for about $4500 a month. (A little more depending on higher care needs.) Visit Nany's Country Cottage

I doubt this will last very long.

Residential Care Home in Katy- Great Caregivers!

Whenever  speaking to families about finding the right assisted living for their loved one I always tell them to look at the caregivers. Do they look happy? How long have they been working for this community. When a caregiver has been working for an assisted living facility or residential care home for a while that speaks volumes to me! It tells me that this is a good place to work and to live.

Consistency in the care staff will make daily life for mom or dad so much easier especially if they have dementia.

Besides being a beautiful residential care home Comfy Home has caregivers who love what they do. Two of her caregivers have been working for Comfy Home for about 9 years and another for 12 years! Wow! These ladies know what they are doing and they are able to really get to know their residents.

The owner started Comfy Home to honor her brother that she cared for. It is Lydia's mission and passion to care for the elderly and disabled.

Tucked neatly away in the countryside  of Pearland, Texas is a comfortable country home that takes care of the elderly.

My Home Assisted Living is owned and operated by and RN with a passion for helping the elderly.

Everything about this home screamed "excellence" to me!  I just dropped in unannounced and found the home spotless the residents and caregivers happy and and sense of peace about the place.

The owner Shaala Srut is an RN. My Home Assisted Living is able to provide  a higher level of care that most people associate with a nursing home. But make no mistake this is no nursing home! With their Type B assisted living license and the direction of an RN this assisted living is able to offer Insulin Management, feeding tube care, foley cath care, wound care and even ostomy care.

We take the more challenging patients the larger facilities are not able to handle.

Missouri City- One Home Makes The List- One Does Not

I publish an availability list of residential care homes on my website Find Houston Senior Care every Thursday to help families and professionals find these smaller care homes dotted throughout the Houston metroplex.

But not every home cuts the mustard. Here is what I saw this week. I went to the Missouri City/Sugarland area yesterday to visit two small homes that were interested in being on my list.

The first one told me they were a Type A licensed facility for two years. I noticed several inconsistencies when I visited. Items that I knew were part of the state regulations such as having all medications in a locked cabinet had not been taken care of. I did not believe the state would license  such a facility.

While waiting for the owner (who was taking a shower when I arrived for our scheduled appointment) I visited with a resident. The gentleman seemed very happy with the home and said his VA benefits helped to pay for it. I was concerned however when he told me that he likes this place because they let him take walks in the neighborhood. Sometimes he said I get winded ( he has COPD and is supposed to be on oxygen) and have to sit down on someones lawn. "The neighbors are very nice and help me" he said. So where are the caregivers he is paying to assist him I wondered?

A caregiver toured me through a dirty kitchen piled high with dishes that appeared to be from the night before. We also visited with other residents in the home. They both seemed happy but I wondered if one lady was capable of being able to evacuate in an emergency. (This is criteria for a type A assisted living home)

After checking further I discovered the home DID NOT have a license!
True, he only had 3 residents and state law says you do not have to have a license, but this home was marketing to get 9 residents in the home. Plus the fact that he had not told the truth about his license. Thumbs down on this one!

The second home I visited was just opening for business. She told me that she planned to only have 3 residents in this home and therefore would not be licensed. She was upfront and honest! She plans to open a larger licensed facility in the future.

The home was spotless and well laid out.  The owner pointed out  safety features she had thought about. This owner is very knowledgeable of the senior industry and is a licensed RN. Her husband is also an RN and together they own a health care company.

After speaking with her for over an hour and talking to several health care professionals I know in the area, I concluded that her reputation is good. I also researched her Home Health Company on the DADS (Department of Aging and Disability Services) website. The Home Health Care Company was in perfect standing. I hope to have this home listed soon as I do feel this would be a good care option for seniors.

Not every home gets on my list

I publish an availability list of residential care homes on my website Find Houston Senior Care every Thursday to help families and professionals find these smaller care homes dotted throughout the Houston metroplex.

But not every home cuts the mustard!

I visited a home in Spring, Texas today and  \they did not make the list. The home was an unlicensed 3 bed home. Now mind you I do not have a problem with an unlicensed home as long as they care for no more than 3 people. The state will allow them to operate. They usually are able to offer a lower price that lets face it some families need. The ones I list do an exceptional job and really have a heart for caring for seniors.

See why this home did NOT make the list.
  1. The home did not have any residents yet and the owner had never worked in or run a care home before. She was told this is a good business to be in.
  2. There was no passion or strong desire to help the elderly.
  3. She had not taken any training in dementia or caring for the elderly
  4. She and her husband planned to run the home by themselves with a 25 year old  son occasionally helping to give them a break.
  5. She was willing to take anybody no matter what their physical condition. She even indicated she would take someone with a feeding tube. This lady is not a nurse and does not have any caregiver training.

Lots of red flags for me.

Two Very Different Residential Care Homes

10/26/2014

Picture
I visited two very different
Residential Care Homes in Cypress, Texas this week.

Let me tell you what I saw. The first home was neat and tidy on the outside of the home. As I entered the first thing I saw was two smiling faces looking at me. They were two elderly residents sitting at a table anticipating an activity that was getting ready to begin. They were both clean and had their hair brushed. Their eyes were clear and bright and we had a short conversation.

I was then led down a hall to the owners office, equally neat and tidy. Sharon greeted me and as I set down she began to tell me the story of this home and how it had come to be this Residential Care Home.

Later when I was led on a tour it was evident that the whole house was kept clean and neat all the time. I might add that no one knew I would be visiting that day.
The residents I met all seemed to be comfortable in their home.

Sharon told me that this home was a type B Assisted Living Facility and explained that they were licensed by the state of Texas. A type  B facility is able to care for someone who may need a higher level of care. This wa a Residential Care home I would feel comfortable placing my family in.
To find our more about this home go to  Cypress Assisted Living

Now for the second home who by the way knew I would be visiting. As I drove up the first thing I noticed was the garage door was cracked open about a third of the way. As I got out of me car I could see feet and wheelchairs inside the garage. Not a good first impression.

I was greeted by a gentleman who did not introduce himself but told me I was expected and to come on in and have a seat. The place was not well kept at all. stains all over the carpet, in bad need of painting and just plain dirty looking. It was a nice home in a nice neighborhood just not very well taken care of. One lady was sitting in a recliner slumped over sleeping and the gentleman who answered the door was sitting on the sofa watching TV. He called someone on the phone to let them know I was here. I found out later he was a caregiver.

A lady came out from the back in slippers. It appeared that she had been sleeping. She told me the lady who made the appointment with me was not available but that she would show me around.

The kitchen was not anywhere near clean with food stuff on the counters and stove top. She did open the door leading into the garage to reveal 3 residents who were outside to smoke. There was no supervision and had I not arrived I am not sure they would have been checked on at all.

Though I was told they had been in business for 11 years, they did not have a license. in Texas homes with more than 3 residents must be licensed. When I asked about that they told me it was pending. For 11 years???
